Arrival in Cape Town and transfer to the Westin Hotel in Cape Town. 

We head north on an enchanting journey to Kalambaka in order to visit the famous monasteries perched atop towering rock formations.  Along the way we stop for a short visit to Thermopylae, site of one of the ancient world’s most famous battles. Located along a narrow pass between mountain and sea, Thermopylae is where King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors, along with other Greek allies, held off the massive Persian army in 480 BC. 

Upon your arrival in Kalambaka, the rising majestic stone pillars of Meteora immediately capture your attention. Start your exploration with a visit to St. Stephen’s Monastery.  St. Stephen’s is known for its serene atmosphere, colorful frescoes, and sweeping views over the plain of Thessaly. The monastery, still active and inhabited by nuns, offers insight into daily monastic life. After your visit, head back to Kalambaka for a relaxed evening meal, sampling local Greek cuisine at a taverna and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the town.

We go to the top of the mountain to see the Holy Trinity Monastery, one of the most iconic Meteora monasteries, perched high on a remote cliff. It is famously accessible via a steep stairway or, historically, by a winch-powered “basket” lift, once used to haul up supplies and visitors. While today’s visitors take the stairs, the old basket and winch system are on display, offering a glimpse of the incredible resilience and dedication of the monks who once lived there. The Holy Trinity Monastery, with its secluded chapel and jaw-dropping vistas of the valley and surrounding cliffs, leaves a lasting impression. Before heading back, take some time to explore the town of Kalambaka, perhaps enjoying a coffee or exploring local artisan shops as you reflect on the incredible sights and experiences of Meteora.

Enjoy the Plaka District in Athens
Walking around the Plaka in Athens is like stepping into a picturesque village nestled within the heart of the city. Known as the "Neighborhood of the Gods," the Plaka is filled with narrow, winding streets, colorful neoclassical buildings, and vibrant bougainvillea draped over balconies. The area is packed with charming tavernas, quaint shops selling Greek crafts and jewelry, and cozy cafes where you can relax and people-watch. With the Acropolis towering above, the Plaka feels like a blend of ancient history and modern-day Athens, making it the perfect spot to soak up the city’s unique atmosphere and culture.

We bus to the port and board our cruise ship in the morning. In the afternoon we sail from Athens to the quaint isle of Mykonos, called the island of windmills. Experience the waterfront lined with shops and cafes and then stroll the charming walkways through a maze of whitewashed buildings before returning to the ship for dinner and evening entertainment.

Ephesus - Book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul and Timothy

Arriving in Turkey, embark on an unforgettable excursion to the ancient city of Ephesus, a biblical landmark and one of the largest restoration projects in progress today. Once a bustling port town with a population of 250,000, Ephesus now offers a glimpse into its glorious past through its spectacular excavations. Wander along marble-paved streets and explore remarkable sites such as the Agora, the Odeon, the Library of Celsus, Trajan’s Fountain, the Patrician Residences, the Prytaneum, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Baths. The Great Theatre, dating back to the 4th century B.C. and accommodating 24,000 spectators, still amazes visitors with its incredible acoustics.

We visit a Turkish Rug factory and Artisan Shops for great shopping. 

Patmos - Book of Revelation, the Apostle John

In the afternoon, sail to the serene Isle of Patmos, a historic site protected as a cultural treasure. Here, visit the fortified Monastery of St. John and the sacred cave where it is believed John received the Revelation. Immerse yourself in the island’s spiritual and historical significance before returning to the ship.

As the day winds down, enjoy the Captain’s Dinner, a delightful evening of fine dining and camaraderie. Later, retire to your cabin, reflecting on the rich history and beauty of the day as you sail into the night.Docking in Turkey, enjoy a tour of Ephesus, the city of the Bible and one of the largest restorations still in progress with miles of ancient treasures. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city including the Agora, the Odeon, the Library, the marble-paved main Street, the Baths, Trajan’s Fountain, the Residences of the Patricians, the Prytaneum, and Temple of Hadrian. The Great Theatre, built in the 4th century B.C., could accommodate 24,000 spectators and it is famous even nowadays for its acoustics. This afternoon we visit the Isle of Patmos, under statutory protection as a historic monument. Here we have a tour to see the fortified monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received the Revelation. 

Back on the ship, enjoy the evening's dinner before settling in to your cabin for the night.

Crete

Crete, the largest and most rugged of the Greek islands, invites you to explore its fascinating history and landscapes. Begin your day with a tour of Heraklion and the legendary ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 and partially reconstructed, this elaborate palace is thought to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the heart of ancient Minoan civilization. Walk through its intricate halls and imagine the grandeur of one of history’s earliest advanced cultures.

Santorini

In the afternoon, sail to the stunning island of Santorini, often hailed as the most breathtaking of all the Greek isles. Consider an optional panoramic bus tour showcasing some of the Aegean’s most spectacular scenery. Travel through charming villages with whitewashed buildings and vibrant blue domes, eventually arriving in the picturesque town of Oia. Stroll through its narrow streets lined with glittering boutiques and cozy open-air cafés, soaking in the enchanting views.

As the day comes to an end, return to the ship to marvel at the lace-like caldera and the islands of Thirasia, Palea, and Nea Kameni, glowing in the evening light. 

Enjoy a delightful dinner on board, followed by lively evening entertainment, as you sail under the starry skies of the Aegean.

Spend a captivating day exploring Athens, a city steeped in history and cultural wonders. Begin early with a visit to the iconic Acropolis, where ancient temples rise majestically against the skyline. Wander through this archaeological marvel and stand in awe of the Parthenon, a symbol of classical architecture; the Erechtheion, with its famous Caryatids; and the Temple of Athena Nike, dedicated to the goddess of victory. From the summit, take in panoramic views of Athens, a sprawling metropolis intertwined with remnants of its glorious past.

Descend to Mars Hill (Areopagus), a storied rocky outcrop beneath the Acropolis. Famous as the site where the Apostle Paul delivered his sermon to the Athenians, this historic location also offers spectacular views of the city and a chance to reflect on its role as a hub of ancient legal and philosophical thought.

In the afternoon, visit the Panathenaic Stadium, also known as the Olympic Stadium. Entirely crafted from gleaming white marble, this awe-inspiring venue hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Stroll along the track, climb the grandstands, and imagine the energy of the cheering crowds as athletes competed in this magnificent arena.

Conclude your day with a leisurely walk or a relaxing coffee at one of Athens’ charming nearby cafés. Soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this timeless city as you reflect on its rich history and enduring cultural legacy.

 Today, we bid farewell to the vibrant city of Athens as we begin our journey home. After a leisurely breakfast, we take our airport transfer from the hotel to the Airport, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of our adventure. With memories of iconic landmarks, rich history, and timeless culture, we board our flight back to Boise, carrying the spirit of London with us as we head home.

Optional Cairo

Spend an unforgettable day in Cairo immersed in ancient wonders and unique experiences. Next, visit the enigmatic Sphinx, a guardian of mysteries carved from a single block of limestone, and ponder its enduring legacy as you stand in its shadow. 

Lunch

For lunch, head to the 9 Pyramids Lounge, an open-air dining oasis where you can savor delicious Egyptian cuisine while soaking in unparalleled views of the pyramids.

Egyptian Museum

In the afternoon, delve into Egypt’s rich history at the Egyptian Museum. Wander through galleries filled with priceless artifacts, including treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb and countless relics that unveil the story of ancient Egypt.

Our final day we enjoy a wonderful and leisurely breakfast at Pioneers Guest Lodge and then transfer to the Airport in Victoria Falls for our flight to Cape Town or Johannesburg.
