Best of Portugal - Ten Days of Culture, Cuisine and Adventure

general icon

June 11 - 20, 2026

Discover the heart of Portugal on this thoughtfully curated 10-day adventure with True Hope Travel — designed for travelers who value beauty, connection, and meaningful experiences. From the cobbled charm of Lisbon to the vineyard-draped hills of the Douro Valley, this journey invites you into Portugal’s living story — one of warmth, tradition, and quiet wonder.

Our trip begins in Lisbon, where old-world alleys, seaside breezes, and local cafés create a city that feels both timeless and full of life. We’ll wander through ancient cathedrals, taste fresh market fare, and hear the echoes of Fado music in tucked-away corners.

In nearby Sintra, misty forests and colorful palaces transport us into Portugal’s romantic past. It feels like a place that never fully left the 19th century.

We will enjoy a gentle change of pace with a scenic countryside excursion to the Aletejo plains east of Lisbon to Evora, where vineyards, cork forests, and olive groves soak up the sun. It’s a chance to experience rural Portugal’s quiet beauty — unhurried, warm, and it's like walking through a postcard.

Traveling north from Lisbon, we pause in Coimbra — home to one of Europe’s oldest universities — where a beautiful baroque librariy, hillside streets, and traditional charm meet spirted youthfulness.

Leaving Coimbra, we continue to Porto, a working city full of character. Its riverfront hums with life. We will visit the city's historic port lodges, and linger in its cafes. In the Douro Valley, we’ll follow the river’s winding path through terraced hills, stopping at traditional quintas for wine tastings, countryside walks, and meals shared under open skies.

Throughout the trip, you’ll stay in 4-star lodging chosen for comfort, and sense of place. Whether cycling through backroads, enjoying a picnic in the shade of cork trees, listening to Fado or sharing stories with a local chef, each day is designed to help you slow down and savor.

More than a vacation, this is an invitation to breathe deeply, taste fully, and travel with intention. Portugal is ready to welcome you — warm, alive, and unforgettable.

The Journey Begins

DateThursday, Jun 11, 2026

With bags packed and hearts full of anticipation, today marks the beginning of an unforgettable journey to Portugal.

As you board your flight from the United States to Lisbon, you leave behind the familiar and lean into the joy of discovery — the promise of winding streets, sunlit coastlines, and shared tables ahead. The overnight flight offers a chance to settle in, rest as much as possible, and begin following a gentle jet lag strategy: hydrate well, enjoy light meals, and adjust your watch to Lisbon time.

Tomorrow, a land of azulejo tiles, fado melodies, and rich heritage will welcome you — and a new adventure will begin.

Those who have chosen to arrive early will be transferred from Lisbon International Airport directly to their hotel in the countryside. Enjoy all of the amenities of the area bookable through or available at the hotel. Consider a variety of day trips, spa time, or simply chill beside the beautiful swimming pool. Where History, Beauty, and Flavor Meet

DateFriday, Jun 12, 2026

Welcome to Portugal. You’ve landed in Lisbon—cobbled, coastal, full of color and corners to explore. Today’s a good day to stretch your legs, take in the view from one of the many shaded public terraces, and ease into the rhythm of the city with a slow coffee or a pastel de nata still warm from the oven.

You’ve also arrived during the Festas de Santo António, Lisbon’s most beloved celebration. The streets are strung with paper streamers, the smell of grilled sardines fills the air, and neighborhoods like Alfama come alive with music, dancing, and small tables spilling into the alleys. It’s loud and local, joyful and a little chaotic—the kind of night where strangers become friends and the city feels like one big backyard party.

Lose, or find, yourself in its maze of narrow cobblestone streets, where laundry flutters from balconies and the soul-moving melodies of Fado music, Portugal's version of the Blues, echo from hidden taverns. With each step, you’ll feel the pulse of authentic Lisbon.

Trip Beginning Dinner: We will meet at 6PM in the Hotel Lobby to go to Dinner together.

Discovering Lisbon’s Heart and Soul

DateSaturday, Jun 13, 2026

After a restful night and a delightful breakfast, your second day unfolds with a journey into the rich tapestry of Lisbon’s vibrant city center. The historic Belém District beautifully reflects Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Here, grand monasteries, maritime symbols, and broad riverfront promenades tell the story of explorers who once sailed from these shores into the unknown. See the breathtaking Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site and masterpiece of Manueline architecture and the iconic Belém Tower, standing watch over the Tagus River since the 16th century.

No trip to Belém would be complete without a sweet stop at the legendary Pastéis de Belém bakery, where you’ll enjoy Portugal’s most famous custard tarts, served warm with a dusting of cinnamon and powdered sugar — a beloved local treat that’s been perfected here since 1837.

Experience Lisbon like a local with a ride on the iconic Tram 28. This historic yellow tram winds its way through some of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods — from the hills of Graça, through the storied alleys of Alfama, and into the elegant squares of Baixa. At Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, one of Lisbon’s most stunning viewpoints, take in sweeping views of the city’s terracotta rooftops, the castle, and the river beyond — the perfect ending to a full day immersed in Lisbon’s beauty and spirit.

Enchanted Palaces and Coastal Wonders

DateSunday, Jun 14, 2026

Today, we venture beyond Lisbon on a day trip to Sintra, a fairytale town nestled in the forested hills just 40 minutes away. Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its whimsical palaces, romantic gardens, and air of magic. See the Pena Palace, a stunning 19th-century hilltop retreat painted in bold reds and yellows, with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. Wander through its lavishly decorated rooms and then stroll the lush, misty trails of the Pena Gardens, where hidden pathways and exotic plants make every turn feel like a discovery.

Step back even further in time with a visit to the Moorish Castle, where ancient stone ramparts wind dramatically along the ridgeline. Climb the towers for incredible vistas and imagine the lives of those who once stood guard over Sintra. Continue your exploration at the mystical Quinta da Regaleira, a palace and garden estate brimming with symbolism, secret tunnels, and the famous Initiation Well — a spiral staircase descending into the earth like something out of a storybook.

Through the Alentejo

Rural Beauty and Flavors

DateMonday, Jun 15, 2026

Departing from Lisbon’s Rua do Comércio, the drive to the Alentejo takes approximately 90 minutes, crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge and quickly leaving the density of the city behind. The landscape opens into broad plains marked by cork oak trees, olive groves, and low stone walls. Whitewashed farmhouses appear intermittently along the route, and in late spring, the fields often carry tones of green and gold. The road is direct and smooth, offering a clear transition from coastal Lisbon into Portugal’s agricultural interior.

Before reaching Évora, a stop at a local winery or olive oil estate introduces the region’s primary industries. Expect working vineyards or groves, production areas, and a structured tasting room where wines or oils are presented alongside bread, cheeses, or cured meats.

Continuing on, Évora’s historic center is entered through medieval walls, with narrow streets leading toward a central cluster of major sites. The Roman Temple of Évora stands prominently with its Corinthian columns, while the nearby Évora Cathedral—built of granite—features a large square façade and accessible rooftop terraces. A short walk away, the Chapel of Bones is housed within a church complex, its interior constructed with human bones arranged in geometric patterns.

The Alentejo is home to the Iberian pig (porco preto), a heritage breed that roams freely through oak forests and feeds on acorns. This diet gives the meat a rich, nutty flavor and a distinctive tenderness that sets it apart. You’ll see it prepared in a variety of simple ways—grilled cuts, slow-cooked stews, or cured into exceptional hams (presunto) that rival those of neighboring Spain.

The visit concludes in Praça do Giraldo, the town’s main square, lined with arcaded buildings, cafés, and small shops selling ceramics, cork goods, and regional products. From here, the return drive to Lisbon again takes about 90 minutes, retracing the same open countryside and gradually re-entering the urban approach across the Tagus River.

University Halls to Coastal Elegance

DateTuesday, Jun 16, 2026

This morning, we depart to Coimbra, a storied city set along the Mondego River, renowned for its scholarly legacy and youthful energy. The lively Mercado Municipal, is a modern covered market where you can gather picnic-style provisions — fresh cheeses, olives, fruit, and warm bread — to enjoy later on the campus green.

Our time in Coimbra centers around its crown jewel: the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe. As we explore its historic buildings, we’ll marvel at the awe-inspiring Baroque library of King João V, often regarded as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. After lunch and a relaxed wander through the cobbled streets of the old town, it’s time to continue our journey.

In the afternoon, we’ll make the 1.5-hour drive to Porto, Portugal’s second city, where the Douro River meets the sea. After checking into our hotel, we will have the evening free to enjoy on your own.

Old World Grace Along the Riverbank

DateWednesday, Jun 17, 2026

Today is a celebration of Porto’s irresistible blend of culture, character, and culinary charm. The city unfolds through steep granite streets, tiled facades, iron balconies, hidden cafés, and long views over the Douro River. Designed as a relaxed and thoughtfully paced introduction to northern Portugal, the day balances walking exploration with private minibus support for comfort along the way.

The experience begins along Avenida dos Aliados, Porto’s grand central boulevard lined with stately architecture, cafés, and civic buildings before continuing into the historic center. Along the way, enjoy the remarkable São Bento Railway Station, where thousands of blue and white azulejo tiles depict scenes from Portugal’s past in one of the country’s most celebrated artistic landmarks. Nearby rises the imposing Sé Cathedral, a Romanesque monument overlooking the city’s terracotta rooftops and winding river below. The walk continues through the Clérigos district, where those interested may climb the iconic Clérigos Tower for sweeping panoramic views across Porto’s rooftops and the Douro Valley beyond.

As the city reveals itself layer by layer, discover elegant spaces like the Palácio da Bolsa, the 19th century Stock Exchange Palace whose ornate salons and Moorish inspired interiors reflect Porto’s former mercantile wealth and influence. Step inside the beautifully restored Café Majestic, a Belle Époque treasure where polished wood, mirrors, chandeliers, and refined pastries evoke another era. Nearby, the famed Livraria Lello invites visitors into one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, known for its neo Gothic architecture, stained glass ceiling, and dramatic curved staircase that has inspired generations of readers and writers. Depending on pacing and interest, there may also be time to wander through Mercado do Bolhão, Porto’s lively central market filled with fresh produce, cheeses, flowers, cured meats, and the rhythms of local daily life.

Descending toward Ribeira, Porto’s colorful riverfront quarter, the atmosphere becomes more intimate and textured. Fishing boats, wine barges, stone alleys, and waterside cafés line the Douro as the city settles into its timeless relationship with the river. The day concludes across the water in Vila Nova de Gaia with a visit to a traditional Port wine cellar, where cool barrel lined lodges preserve the craftsmanship, aging, and history behind Portugal’s most famous export while offering memorable views back toward the city skyline.

Sipping and Savoring in the Douro Valley

DateThursday, Jun 18, 2026

Today is devoted to one of the most beautiful wine landscapes in Europe, where terraced vineyards climb steep hillsides above the winding Douro River. The experience has been intentionally designed to feel immersive rather than hurried, allowing time to absorb the rhythm, scenery, flavors, and quiet beauty of northern Portugal’s wine country.

Leaving Porto behind, the road gradually gives way to rolling hills, stone villages, vineyard terraces, and olive groves as the landscape narrows into the Douro Valley. Along the way, enjoy a stop in the historic town of Amarante, a graceful riverside community known for its baroque architecture, quiet plazas, and deep cultural ties to the region. This brief introduction offers a glimpse into the slower pace and traditional character of inland Portugal before continuing deeper into wine country.

The journey continues through dramatic vineyard roads toward the breathtaking São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint, one of the valley’s most celebrated panoramas. From here, endless layers of vine covered hills descend toward the river below, revealing why the Douro has inspired poets, winemakers, and travelers for generations. Throughout the drive, your guide will provide insight into the valley’s UNESCO protected heritage, centuries old wine traditions, and the remarkable agricultural engineering that shaped the terraces carved into the mountainsides.

Midday brings a traditional regional lunch featuring the hearty flavors and relaxed hospitality of the Douro. In Pinhão, one of the valley’s most iconic river towns, step aboard for a gentle 45 minute cruise along the Douro River. Floating quietly between vineyard estates and terraced hillsides offers an entirely different perspective of the valley, where the reflections of vineyards and old quintas shimmer across the water beneath the warm northern Portuguese light.

The day concludes with a visit to a carefully selected wine estate, Quinta da Roêda chosen not simply for reputation but for atmosphere, setting, and authenticity. Here, surrounded by vines and sweeping valley views, enjoy a guided tasting of three regional wines while learning about the history, cultivation, and craftsmanship that have made the Douro Valley one of the world’s great wine regions.

You will return to Porto for a free, relaxed evening.
